जिसका बेटा वश में रहता है, पत्नी पति की इच्छा के अनुरूप कार्य करती है और जो व्यक्ति धन के कारण पूरी तरह संतुष्ट है, उसके लिए पृथ्वी ही स्वर्ग के समान है। ।।3।।
प्रत्येक व्यक्ति संसार में सुखी रहना चाहता है, यही तो स्वर्ग है। स्वर्ग में भी सभी प्रकार के सुखों को उपभोग करने की कल्पना की गई है। इस बारे में चाणक्य कहते हैं कि जिसका पुत्र वश में है, स्त्री जिसकी इच्छा के अनुसार कार्य करती है, जो अपने कमाए धन से संतुष्ट है, जिसे लोभ लालच और अधिक कमाने की चाह नहीं है, ऐसे मनुष्य के लिए किसी अन्य प्रकार के स्वर्ग की कल्पना करना व्यर्थ है। स्वर्ग तो वह जाना चाहेगा, जो यहां दुखी हो।
ते पुत्रा ये पितुर्भक्ताः स पिता यस्तु पोषकः ।
तन्मित्रं यस्य विश्वासः सा भार्या यत्र निर्वृतिः ।।
पुत्र उन्हें ही कहा जा सकता है जो पिता के भक्त होते हैं, पिता भी वही है जो पुत्रों का पालन-पोषण करता है, इसी प्रकार मित्र भी वही है जिस पर विश्वास किया जा सकता है और भार्या अर्थात पत्नी भी वही है जिससे सुख की प्राप्ति होती है। ।।4
चाणक्य का मानना है कि वही गृहस्थ सुखी है, जिसकी संतान उसके वश में है और उसकी आज्ञा का पालन करती है। यदि संतान पिता की आज्ञा का पालन नहीं करती तो घर में क्लेश और दुख पैदा होता है। चाणक्य के अनुसार पिता का भी कर्तव्य है कि वह अपनी संतान का पालन-पोषण भली प्रकार से करे। जिसने अपने कर्तव्यों से मुंह मोड़ लिया हो. उसे पुत्र से भी भक्ति की आशा नहीं करनी चाहिए। इसी प्रकार मित्र के विषय में चाणक्य का मत है कि ऐसे व्यक्ति को मित्र कैसे कहा जा सकता है, जिस पर विश्वास नहीं किया जा सकता और ऐसी पत्नी किस काम की, जिससे किसी प्रकार का सुख प्राप्त न हो तथा जो
